This tree was planted around 20 years ago. It was very small and now it's approximately 30' (10m) tall. Photo taken Aug. 11, 2016 in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA.

Some of the nicest Foxtail palms are planted very close to the beach. They seem to grow very well there. You have to remember the temps stay very even almost all year. A high of temp in low 80's and a low of 70 degree is optimum for many tropical plants. Balboa Park is very close to San Diego Bay; however, the temperature can be 15 degrees higher in the center of Balboa Park only a few miles away from downtown because of its southeast location. The Western Edition of Balboa Park is always cooler.

Yes,warm nights are very important for tropicalia. The last two summers we had nights well into the 60's this time of year.
This year, its been 60f tops. The Pacific is running cold right now.

Yes, it is very important to have warm nights...and the temps drop very slowly here.
Yes, the ocean temp here has dropped, also. The Pacific Ocean was in the upper 70's along most of San Diego's coast for quite a few weeks, now it's dropped into the mid-to-upper 60's (lots of up-welling). The Bay is still 77 degrees; however, last week it was over 80 degrees. I don't remember seeing the water in SD Bay that warm (maybe in 2006 when coastal temps went up as high as 83 degrees in many areas)

What else?
This photo is of species Wodyetia bifurcata - Foxtail Palm.
Balboa park is close to the coast isn't it? Doesn't seem to slow down palms that need hot summers to thrive and bloom like that Foxtail.
