Gladiolus callianthus - 2016

Another plant the botanists keep shuffling with, so you may find it listed as acidanthera murielae or gladiolus murielae. Grows in a sunny spot on well-drained soil. The fragrant flowers are carried on stems two and a half feet tall. It is not hardy so the corms must be lifted and stored in a frost free place during winter. Do not replant too soon - May or even June is plenty early enough. Alternatively, nip off to the Garden Centre and buy another pack.

HB - I bought a pack from our local GC earlier this year. I think I paid less than a fiver for 50 corms so they are great value. Or go 50/50 with a friend?

Even here in the Cotswolds I find them hardy in a normal winter. The trick is to lift them at the end of the season and replant at least 10cm deep, ideally 15cm. The usual caveat of well drained soil applies. The size of the corms is really surprising when you consider how small they were when you planted them.

I love these too but this year the leaves have been very badly eaten and not all of them have flowered.
