Ice Cream banana

The bananas are developing very well. It looks much better than mine.

I'm lucky. I'm sure nobody thought of the bay area as banana and the others I have going as climate suitable.
Homebird...when I first saw a King palm in the bay area? I was shocked. Now,I plant anything out of the "houseplants/tropical's" section of the local home improvement stores!

I've always done that when I lived in the SF Bay Area. I luckily had few disappointments.

I think I commented my grandmother grew bananas in Hayward for more than 30 years. They were the best!

Andy,when I started posting on the net n 2005,so many local experts told me they couldn't grow or ripen because it was too cold. It was like their mantras to say "Only in soucal"..including Biamarckia palms,Pachypodiums,Mangos,Papaya's, and just about everything I posted growing or wanted to try.
I tried not to listen..but I passed on things because of how they got me to think..so I should be eating blood oranges!..darn.

My philosophy was try it a few times. If it didn't grow, then it didn't grow. However, if you never planted it, you will never know, right?

They also Andy said things that sounded authoritative "If it last five years then you can say it can be grown here"
Well,the Pachy's are all well over five years now...more like ten. The Mango is 6 (4 in ground). Maridol is only 3. It cant be done I guess-wink.

Pachypodium are pretty hardy, they just don't like wet soil when cold. There's literally hundreds of Pachypodium at the San Diego Wild Animal Park or Safari Park (in San Pasqual)...they all survived the really cold weather in January of 2007.

The larger the mango tree the hardier they become...that doesn't surprise me because I had a fruit-bearing tree in Mission San Jose, Fremont. Papayas growing in the Bay Area are my biggest surprise. I was never able to successfully grow any tropical papaya in the SF Bay Area.

Still summer in La Mesa I see. Interesting is that just a few miles to the coast and they are having the same temps as Hayward. La Mesa really is much hotter then the coast. Its near Arizona like now..not quite,but pretty hot.

It's been warm to hot here. It was forecasted to be much cooler yesterday...nope it wasn't still in the low 80's. Tomorrow is forecasted to be in the mid 90's. We've had 100 degree weather in the past in November. It's the sunniest month statically in San Diego.

Actually, we can easily get hotter weather than Phoenix and Palm Springs this time of year during the day. It's even more common when we get into December and January to have much warmer than those two cities.

La Mesa, CA. still holds the U.S. high temperature record in December. The record is 107ºF back in 1939.
