Beaucarnea recurvata - Ponytail Palms Flowering

Beaucarnea recurvata - Ponytail Palms Flowering (Beaucarnea recurvata - Ponytail Palm)

These are not palms. It's just a common name. There's hundreds of these growing at the San Diego Zoo. This is the time of year they start to flower. Photo taken on Nov. 2, 2016.

RED blooms??

Yes, for some reason the ones at the San Diego Zoo have red instead of cream flowers. I love them! I've taken many pics of them flowering over the years.

I had to look it up,but I think they are saying the red blooms are female plants.
I left a question with Palmbob about that.

I had no idea this shrub was dioecious. I though it was monoecious. So, this means most of the large ones at the SD Zoo are female.

Darn,50/50 and I got a male. Doesnt matter much since here its bloomed only 2 maybe 3 times since I planted it in 1992. It skipped the last few too.

That's surprising it only bloomed a few times.

There's one around the corner from me that has red flowers right now.
