Grand and interesting house. I do like the old Greek architecture. I do not see any columns though.
Trees are pretty too....

Hywel -no need to apologize. That house isn't quite right for me either- too dark & gloomy, even on a sunny day! I just wanted to show off the craftsmanship and architectural style. I'm currently working on a blog with a few more grand examples.
Hi Klahanie, I can't see columns either. It's private property and I can only view the house from behind the gate and brick wall. The columns could be on the other side. I'm fairly certain it belongs to that era as The White House in Washington DC - that is the finest example of Greek Revival.

I like the iron work of the gates and fencing ....

It looks a bit like a Frank Lloyd Wright . . . :)

Very interesting style... But I don't like the green roof tiles at all! :D

Now Bathgate, you perked my interest to read about Clinton Hills and Mr. Charles Pratt.
This house was desined and built in 1893 by William Tubby in the "Romanesque Revival" style as the residence of Charles Millard Pratt, a son of Charles Pratt,
(I learned little bit of Brooklyn's history). What confused me was the arched entrance which is not typically Greek architecure.
It is now the residence of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn.
Grand building but not my favorite either. Looks filled with darkness. I can understand Hywel comment.

Hi Tracey, The green roof makes a very strong statement, but I think the idea was to use colors that would blend in with nature - I like it.
Klahanie: That's fascinating information - I appreciate your research. Brooklyn is filled with so much history. I'm working on a blog with a few more examples. I hope you enjoy it.
Sheila - I can see that too. Frank Lloyd Wright lived from 1867-1959. He must of had some influence on William Tubby, maybe a student or colleague. Klahanie?

Bathgate,They did live approximately in the same era but do not believe that they had an influence on each other.
But I do not know that for sure it is only mine opinion.
William Tubby created important buildings in a variety of styles, and was known for his Romanesque and Dutch Revival-style designs.
I have a book on Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. I see him as an environmentalist, maybe because of his famous Fallingwater house and I think he had his own barrier-breaking architecture designs . Not all of it appeals to me .
Looking forward to read your blog.

Klahanie, I'm a great fan of Lloyd Wright's designs and have a book on his gardens!

Sheila, He was (and is) certainly very celebrated architect and his unique lifestyle is well advertised. I like most of his designs (the ones I've seen)....except I really dislike his unosian houses or the mid-century-modern movement afterwards by other architects. Do not know what was his thinking, "Down to earth"?
His Arizona place (Taliesin) had definitely wonderful landscape as many other of houses he designed and are (were) privately owned . Some were restored but many were destroyed or torn down.
I did not know that he was known for his garden designs. I knew he was incorporating natural elements within his designs and cared how the building was set in the soundings .
Learning something every day :-)

I adore his Fallingwaters house, and in fact most of his other houses. Came across his gardens book one day and felt sure it would be interesting :)

The Fallingwater house is very special . I love it too. He was very talented architect and deserves his fame .
