WOW! These are huge! :o))

3 Feb, 2017

They can grow very large outside under laths or under trees. The Botanical Building is a gigantic lath-structure here in San Diego.

They are really fab ;o) Thanks for showing them to us on here! :o)

You're very welcome. :>))

They can and do grow well even this far north. At least the two I have do. Mine are out on the porch. If they were on a tree in the endless cool rains we are having that might be different..but porch growing is not cheating..lol.

Cattleyas do best on a porch or under trees and lath. They need some shade.

omg- Andy. The rains today? Heaviest of the year..sheets. The telephone pole across the street nearly fell over. PGE spent into late Sunday and into early-3am -Monday replacing it.
Another river of moisture- 60 was the low..63 in San Jose.
Warmer then what the day is supposed to be.
They (weatherpeople) really missed the call on this one.

I heard about the the very heavy rains from my mom. I also was hearing about it on the Bay Area news. I saw the radar last night, for the Bay Area...it was lit up with bright reds and yellows.

We received so little rain, it wasn't funny (a few little drops). I was hoping we would receive more very heavy rains!

It did warm up here, also. Yesterday felt kind of chilly today mostly mid-to-upper 60's

I did hear about another "atmospheric river" setting up. It appears to be aimed in your direction, though. Here in San Diego we're going to stay dry, for now.

First wave..and now a second wave. Ch2 Meteor man said in "In Meteorological school I never heard "Atmospheric river" as often as I've heard it this season"
Niles has been closed 4 times this year. Once is usually the max--other then for routine pruning, etc. These are all mudslide..or car accident closings. I have to post a (blurry) photo I took of a car in Niles creek itself. This one,he swam back to the banks- no harm. The car is just totaled.
Temps have been..low of 62 high of 63..just warm and what you would expect of thick cloud cover.

8 Feb, 2017

I remember when Niles was closed for several weeks due to severe flooding back in 1997. That was during the very strong El Nino.

I guess we're going to get a good flow of moisture a week from tomorrow. I guess the drought is not over for us here in Southern California. The news said it was over; however, the governor says no.

The weather here has been extremely mild, also. Tomorrow will be close to 80 degrees. It's still 60 degrees here at 12:30 a.m.

Its groundhog day here. Cloudy,63f more or less by a degree, and soaking, soaking wet. Moldy wet.
I think the Tri color draceana is dead. The A.arabicum is dead, the Hibiscus "Bahama" has defoliated...all else still going well. Mango looks fine. Papaya still standing..with only newest top leafs.
Its rainforest conditions. Our monthly low is 53f. That's waaay over our low 40's+ average for the time of year.
But!..King palms loving soaking wet and mild...they really greened up like summer.
Not much to do though Andy..not warm enough yet or for sure dry enough.

10 Feb, 2017

It was 71 degrees today, 9 degrees cooler than yesterday. I'm still waiting for the rain and it's almost 12:30 a.m. I guess the rain is moving very slowly down this way.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your plants! :>((
A. arabicum is not really hardy up there. I'm so amazed that it does so well here. I'm so happy your papaya plants are still alive. This spring they should grow very well with all the rain.

The plants here are growing so quickly because of the rain this year. I can't believe it! I see the mango trees here flushing growth and flowering (typically, they don't flush growth when flowering). That's pretty unusual to see so many mango trees flushing growth during the winter. My little mango seedling looks terrific! The little tree wants to take off! It needs to be transplanted into a larger pot very soon.
