Mine is about the same height as yours at the moment and Purple Fantasy. I still have about 6" of old stems left as protection, no just didn't prune out low enough.

No sign of Purple Fantasy, we cut everything down last Autumn, and covered the whole garden with a layer of composted bark!

I sometime wonder... It is suggested to use bark chippings to suppress weeds, does it also restrict new growth on established plants a bit?
