Strelitzia nicolai

Strelitzia nicolai

This doesn't bloom at the same time every year. It is finally getting a bloom on a second trunk. It was grown from seed, and is 14 years old.

Not as pretty as the Orange.

This is a hard one to get a photo of. The flower is about 15-20 feet off the ground. The stalks are 10" across, and the leaves are enormous. One of the traits of this is that there is virtually no stem on the flower. The orange one frequently has 2 flower heads, but this one gets 5+. Having seen this, there are 2 additional heads on the left, and more will grow.

This isn't something that can be grown in a pot and moved indoors for the winter. It would take a tractor just to pull it out of the ground if I ever wanted to move it.

When you mentioned to Siris Wylie it was 15 to 20ft off the ground and the huge size of the flower I gathered it was there to stay .?

I have wanted to move and tried to get a piece to establish it in another area, but nothing has worked. The area it is in is terraced, which is how I got the photo of the flower almost head on; but on the upper terrace is a chestnut tree that is also huge and blocks the sun. All of that helps to block the wind. You can get blown away in one section, then move past all this and it is very calm. That is the section I have my Dahlia imperialis in, which is about 15 feet tall right now and will get flowers in November.

Does the flower go yo seed and could you get the seed and try that if its to deep to get at a root cutting.

Thats great to have terraced areas and different climates in each area amd good for taking photos to so you can grow different types of plants the Chesnut tree sounds lovely.

I shall look forward to seeing your Dahlia imperialis in November sounds lovey.

There are no pollenators for this around here, and if I wanted seed, it would require a tall ladder and would have to be done by hand. The seed is also very difficult to germinate. It took a year to get this one.

Thats a shame there is nt any polenators to polonate it for you. Could you try this method.

The flowers are about 15 feet off the ground. There is no way to reach them to do it. And it keeps getting taller every year with the flowers getting further away from the ground.
