Planted by previous owner in a very shaded corner, last year cleared a lot out so gets more sun. After it has finished flowering plan to cut it down hard in the hope that it will bush out.

It should be ok if it does nt flower next year it might the year after as this link says it produces next years new growth straight away and if pruned to late you will sacrifice next years flowers. I have never had a large Lilac so its new to me I only have the mini one.

Your very welcome Jen would hate for you to be disappointed if you had nt cut it back quick enough then lost next years flower. I had peony moved some years back one my mum gave me I did nt realise at the time they dont like being moved after all these years it has now got a bud. ?

I have cut some of mine back and they do fill back out quickly. Just try to do it immediately after flowering since they set flower buds for next spring during the summer.
