I've been waiting for this plant to flower as I thought it was a perennial poppy (leaves) but now it's opened I don't have a clue what it is or where it came from. Sometimes the flowers look like Centaurea and other times like thistles although they're not a bit prickly.

Thanks for that Resinone. I looked this up but the leaves on mine are like Centaurea scabiosa. It doesn't matter, it's growing on me now.

Are the leaves alway so yellow in this variety?

No Siris, that's the camera. Anything even close to a bit of sunshine comes out yellow.

I think you're right Thorneyside,
it looks to me like centaura nigra, the common knapweed.
