Our Spanish dream

The garden of the casa we created by making a series of small gardens with gravel walk ways. There is a hand palm and quite a few canary palms and cypresses. They took a couple of years to get established but then were fine. After about 3 years we put in an irrigation system of rain water piped round the most needy of plants.

When the winds came from the south, the clouds picked up sand from the Sahara, moisture from the sea, and then deposited it (mainly on our place lol) so that paths, tables chairs, everything was covered in yellow sandy rain!
We had about 20inches a year, and like you had a rainwater tank (cisterna) which held 20,000 litres. Ian installed an electric water pump and plumbing system which was run by a generator which in turn was powered by solar panels and a wind turbine, which we used for about 3 years. Luckily mains water was already on our land so we had it connected to the cisterna and mains electric brought to the casa. Though we liked the self sufficiency life style, it wasn't practical as Ian was building a large extension at the back and we had originally planned to let out the old casa for back to nature holidays, which we did for about 3 years.

We bought it in 1995 and went to live there in 2000 Marguerite but sold it 18months ago. The heaviest
rainfall month was October when in 2000 it washed our whole drive down into the next farm. Very strong spring winds, the Mistral and also sand-filled rains from Africa April -July.
