Only one of this variety saved from lily beetle

The dratted Lily Beetle ,I'm glad you saved this one Brian ...

Its a beauty. I ve read if you have got lily beetle to change the soil as they lay their eggs in the soil . Have you got the spray to protect and kill the lily beetle Brian.

A very nice Lily, Brian! The ones I had on my balcony, that I grew from seed, were never infested by this pest though they were attacked their very first year while down on the allotment. I managed to save them & brought them home. They flowered several years on the balcony & never saw a single beetle!

Our son had them on his Lilies last year & bought a spray to kill them. This year he has been much more vigilant & I think he's managed to avoid them eating his plants this year.

They are more manageable in pots especially if the soil is changed each year as Thrupennybit says the eggs over winter in the soil.

As my plants weren't attacked I had no need of changing the compost in the pots. But they have weakened considerably in the last couple of years. This year as there was little sign of life in the pots I emptied them out to see if they were growing or had rotted or something had been eating the bulbs away. I found a few rotten pieces & some very small bulbs that obviously wouldn't be flowering this year. I did however find just one big bulb that was sound but why it hadn't started into growth I don't know.

I have too little space on the balcony to keep practically empty pots so I took them all out & later replanted them in the church gardens. I hope they will grow on & flower there in a couple of years time. The big bulb also went there & I expect to see it flower sometime this year. It's a shame because I like them very much but needs must.
