This may be 'Niobe' which was planted back in 2002. It failed to flower for a couple of years and is now scrambling through a Ceanothus shrub.

Indeed it is ... I wonder what the life span of a Clematis is?

I've no idea, but have known them to be many years old. ..I recall my grandparents having a Montana and it was at least 20yrs old.

Oh yes, Montanas can get enormous too! I will never understand why our lovely neighbour cut his Montana down as we loved to see it coming through the trellis on our shared fence! Oh well, my climbing Roses are filling the gaps now ... :o)

I had one which was getting beyond a joke, so I chopped it back...result? One dead Montana...serves me right.
