My first iris of the season. First time blooming , planted 2014

Yes the season starts later here in Nova Scotia. The intermediate one bloom around mid June and the tall ones to follow next and into July . The Siberian irises also are forming bids now. The last ones are the Japanese irises . I read in your posts that you are saving seeds and growing new plants from them. You are a very organized and patient iris lover for sure . I have always cut the seed pods off the plants as soon as the flowers are finished . Is this the right thing to do if I am not saving seeds?

Yes Nancy , cut off the pods if you don't want the seed, they only sap the energy. I would cut the pod stalk 1/2 way down below the papery bit, here it just collects black fly and water.

Goodness that's an eyeful. Love the colours in the standards. Your season just started? Here in the South of UK mine have finished and I have some large pods on crosses I made earlier.
