Yes it was I believe you did see them in nearly every garden back then even up to the 70s the red ones any way, I have grown Cosmos, not often you see the seeds as much as I use to any way they are in B&Q I seen them the other day but in pots, but not unusual ones like I use to see I think any thing that becomes a popular seller that's rare they go to the breeders like different coloured Hellebores seldom do you don't see these except on line in nursery s at a price or special garden centres the local shops only sell white ones. I shall find some of the Cosmos I have grown out for you later and show you. Also I think people are going for perennial s the older they get as they don't want the work of growing annual s and the youngester s hardly know about some plants we use to grow . Its lovely to go down memory Lane no harm it that. :o))

Now thats a huge clump , it reminds me of
" Royal Standard" as it ticks all the boxes with height and colour of the flower and I am 99.99 certain it is going from your photo
If possible can you do a close up of a flower for me ? from the top to the bottom.
I have added to favs for reference
I had a feeling you would have one
Thorneyside from what my mum told me her dad grew them in the 1930's 40's ...
I grow about 10 different varieties ? I would have to count them and some flower everyear and some occasionally !

There's someting about red hot pokers (kniphofia) that takes me back to my childhood. I think just about every garden had one. Was it a 50's and 60's thing I wonder because you don't see them anywhere near as much now. Cosmos was another, we called them fairy flowers. Sorry, just taking a trip down memory lane for a minute there.
