They tend to sell them here as houseplants Stan. Nothing like the size of this one.

What a show its lovely.

They aren't large vines. Really perfect for small yards. I tell you, THIS stood out a block away.

It's very commonly used here as a landscape plant. I remember a huge Mandevilla 'Alice du Pont' in Mission San Jose, Fremont. It was gorgeous! It was located at the end of Drischoll Rd at Mission Blvd.

I'm going to have to google that. I tried about 20 years ago..and it just died in winter in its pot.
They need some kind of overhang to keep off cold winter rains,frosty temps.
Parasol..doesnt care. Takes- likes- all the winter rains,and it might defoliate in a frosty winter...but comes back very fast.

It's funny I never had any problems growing M. 'Alice du Pont' in the SF Bay Area. Well, the only problems were with bugs.

You are talking about the corrugated vine with big pink flowers and the leafs are not glossy-a little hairy? There is another called "Alice Du Pont that's just a pink version of Parasol red. Its smaller yet. Glossy leaves.
I know in SD the viney plant does fine- I saw photos of them.

Yes, Mandevilla 'Alice du Pont' has dark green, corrugated, thick leaves and beautiful large fragrant pink flowers which smell like strawberry ice cream. This was the reason I feel in love with the vine. lol.

I also grew M. boliviensis when it wasn't common in Fremont.(I know it's common now). The only problem was the gophers sometimes liked to eat the roots.

I might try it again then. I saw them at HD last week.

At my age,exotic that grow a little faster are getting to be more important then the "In 20 years..".

My experience it was an easy vine to grow. Just be aware aphids love the leaves.

Pandanus utilis grows here very well. Unfortunately, it's not too common a plant here, though. I have a friend in North Park who had several and they were very nice fast-growing plants. He easily started them from large cuttings. It will be interesting to see if they grow up there. I've never grown one.
