this gorgeous specimen was alongside a disused Railway in Derbyshire - the Monsal trail. What is it?

Definitely looks like a Vabascum. My one didn't show this year. It lasted four years though.

thank you all for your advice. This one was especially nice as the leaves were similar to a buttercup leaf - only larger. Not "furry" like a yellow one I grew a few years ago.
Yes, on a week's holiday based in Ashbourne but got about a fair bit as the weather was lovely. So many different wild flowers still in the Dales. Ones that I had forgotten about that grew here in Sussex when I was a child.

It could well be verbascum chaixii, in which case it has escaped from a nearby garden by seed.
