Hedychium gardnerianum

Hedychium gardnerianum

Time for this weed to start flowering. It is very invasive here. The seeds germinate with ease all over the place.

Stunning I thought it was a Costa Richo national orchid flower or a ginger.

It is in the family, like Gg says. The white and pink ones will be flowering soon☺ Trouble is, they all have a strong scent and develop into huge clumps very quickly. Some of the stalks are over 6' tall.

I've never seen this before and on the page of pics I thought it was a late foxtail lily. Amazing and beautiful too.

It is one that has to be kept from any frost. I did see it on a cooking show from the UK where the Two Fat Ladies visited a place that was making some bread for the Portuguese workers in the traditional style. They wrap the dough in the leaves of this plant and then cook it in a wood oven (like a pizza oven).
It will die back after flowering and then develop a new rhizome for the shoots and flowers the next spring.

It is nice, but here it is very, very invasive. It even does well in my woods.
