They are poisonous to people... all parts, especially the fruit and roots. They have been known to kill children but make adults very ill. The fruit is very bitter so the incidence of people eating them is rare. Apparently the fruit are not harmfull to birds and they are the means of seed dispersal for the plant. The white actea berries are called "doll's eyes" because they are white with a black dot.

Yes birds have a special digestive systom to us that can change the poison to edable for them. I can see how children can be attracted to them. Yes I like the white berry with the black dot unusual I dont find it creepy lol.
