Stunning I really like this colour.

It is in a pot, but holds its own against the Amaryllis in the background.

Several years ago I had a conifer in the front yard. It dominated the whole area, and finally became too big to decorate for Christmas - I couldn't reach the top, even with a ladder. So I cut it down, and started using the stump to put a pot on, out of the reach of the cats. It has become a bit wobbly as the roots are rotting away, so the next place for the stump to go is into the fireplace.

I bet it looked wonderful decorated for Christmas shame it grew to big sad the stump has to go now to but at least it will come in use to keep you warm and had several uses . What a good idea using the stump though for a pot holder . I ve often thought if I had such a tree and had to cut it down I would of loved to of carved an animal figure into the trunk left over.

I had grown the tree from seed, but I did get a seed from it and have its daughter planted in a place where it can grow as tall as it wants.

Wow Wie you grew it from seed how many years old was it when you had to cut it down I think it more upsetting to cut some thing down you grew your self ghan a bought one. Thats fantastic you have the seedling from the original and can now grow as tall as it like in a right space.

It was 10 years old when I cut it down. The seedling was put near the giant strelitzia that also came from seed, and is doing very well.

A fast grower then and good going for the giant sterlitzia Bird of Paradise ?

See page 18 (Apr. 7) of my photos for the Bird of Paradise. It only took 11 years to get the first flower. Now I have 2 stalks that bloomed this year. The roots are so deep, I haven't been able to get a side shoot dug out, so it is going nowhere.

I sball take a look thank s Wylie. I hope you eventually get a side shoot.

I get them, I just can't dig far enough down to get a root so I could transplant it. It is turning into a huge colony.

I see so its deep down. If you could transplant it vould nt you split it Wylie . I can imagine it is turning into a huge colony I thought the red ones where big seeing the American ones this is much taller and bigger.
