Mango almost there..

Thanks. Its a long wait and I think after factoring in water and fertilizers and my time..its like $100 ( exaggerating) per Mango!..but its for fun.

They're going so much nicer than those you buy in the shops.

Wow! They look great! Most of the trees here have been harvested back in July...however, I do see some with fruit still. I'm noticing a lot of the mango trees here the last few years have had two and three crops. I don't think I've seen that in years past.

Should be very soon to harvest. Its flushing again. I see many people here now get its not good to let small tree's set fruit. They wont grow a single leaf for that whole year. Only in California.
I did pick off half the panicles in spring. Those are the only branches that have flushed since. Good thing I did that.
Its up to 9' now and counting...but they really need to be multiplanted in the bay area to get a real harvest.

Well, I'll have to disagrees a little. When I had my small Keitt mango it set fruit and flushed growth. I do know it's not a good idea, though. My tree was only about 6' tall.

I could kick myself for letting all the plants shade it out and kill it. Mango trees want full-sun.

Is this the Bailey Marvel mango?

I bought it as Baileys. Now,I dont know if its that or the rootstalk..or sold as Baileys and its always been a Manila.
The fruit are not round.

It definitely doesn't look like Bailey. It's a nice looking mango, though. Manila fruit tend to be smaller, so shorter ripening, I guess, right? :>))

Yes. It was killed back by one freeze- but the new growth seemed to comeback above the graft line,I remember taking photos of it sprouting above the graft line. Well,its at least like the Fremont Mango- small fruit,but more of them.
Two others I read good things about- Valencia Pride and Glenn. Best for cooler areas. But,my Baileys was very fast..until 2 years later. Still fast but ..who knows what a pure Baileys could do by now?

I'm surprised it was killed back by a freeze. I know Hayward doesn't get freezes very often...maybe one every 10 years or so.

If you can grow Glen, it's one of the best-tasting fruit of the commercial mango varieties. It also has an excellent disease resistance with a beautiful and vigorous tree growth.
