I saw a Arizona vid on growing Papaya. The Maridol was 5' at the same time other types were 20'. He called that one by its number..no name. Passed down from the rare fruit grower members. I wish I had that. Maridol would have needed four years to give ripe Papayas here. Too slow for that,although for the plant itself doesn't matter,they look great.

You're talking about the Jake Mace YouTube video. I saw that video. Tainung no 1. is a Thai variety of papaya. It's really popular in California.

I know a guy on the internet in Modesto who grew that one and it survived a long time. Papayas do need a lot of heat...and Arizona does have the heat.

Is that the famous TR Hovey? ahhh,I never knew that. Because even though Arizona bakes- his Maridol hadn't grown much more in 2 years then mine had in 3..I mean,that's close for the two climates.
I wonder if I should order that? I wish I had known this in spring.

I think TR Hovey is a different hybrid. It's a variety that produces fruit when really young and small.

Maradol will grow in the low desert. I've seen Maradol papayas in Palm Spring. I was so surprised it grew so well in the full sun there. I expected them to be fried!

TR Hovey would be a good variety to grow in the SF Bay Area because it produces fruit very young and small.

Papaya milkshakes or lassies are just the best on a hot summer day. I highly recommend!

When can you expect your trees to fruit?

These I'm going to sell off. I have a 12' tall Red Caribbean in the ground fruiting now. I planted one from this bunch into the ground. Most of the time papaya plants fruit within a year...depending on variety.

You have extra seeds?

No, unfortunately I don't have any more seed. I got the seeds originally from a fruit I purchased at Trader Joe's. If you want I can send you some when my fruit ripens.

However, I wouldn't recommend this variety for outside in the SF Bay Area. It's really, really tender. It took me a few tries to get it to grow even here in San Diego. It's the most tropical variety I've ever grown. The hardiest ones in order are: Maradol, Thai Dwarf, Strawberry, Hawaiian Solos and Red Caribbean. (of course, the babaco and mountain papayas do the best up there).
