Mystery plant?

My friend has moved to a new house and has found this grass/plant.....could anyone identify it please?

It looks like a Cordyline to me too with what looks like the dead stump of the original plant. I have a red one that this happened to. I thought it had died from a bad frost a few years ago but it sprouted from the side a few months later.

Either that or a Phormium, but looks more like a Cordyline.
