Mahonia eurybracteata - 2017 (Mahonia eurybracteata)

Sometimes listed as M. confusa, this mahonia grows to five feet and flowers in the autumn. This is the straight species, not the recently introduced 'Sweet Caress'

Nice leaves - do the flowers open out more than that? I bought Sweet Caress and it is way too tender for here. It didn't like the shady place I first put it and it hated the windy spot I moved it to. Not much other choice here...

It is a standard sort of shape and i wondered if i cut the top off if it would sprout from the bottom - what do you think?

The flowers on this species are not very big so this is more or less what you get.
I would suggest you try cutting back one of the side stems in the head first and see how it reacts.

There aren't any - its like a miniature palm tree and its only about eighteen inches tall. It has hardly grown at all and I'm seriously wondering whether its worth bothering..
Might be better off with Apollo...

I tried for years to get Soft Caress to grow. In a pot. Had it outdoors and in the greenhouse over winter. Someone on here said to put it in the ground in a shady spot. I did, and now its gorgeous! No protection. I still can't quite believe it! But its a lovely plant, so I'm hoping it will get through another winter.

Well its certainly worth try as its doing nothing now.If it will survive with you it ought to be OK here but it did object to this years winds.

Well, mine is tucked in beside a fern so it does have protection from a friend!

I was thinking about an evergreen fern for that position anyway so it will have company if I move it. Good idea.
