Started off life on the Church Altar at the Easter Mass. I love the effect of blackened leaves & shocked flower-heads. Hope it stays this way all winter.

Thanks (like your new avatar). I'm sure it will survive. This plant needs the cold rest period - transitioning from the church altar, to my garden must have been stressful. lol! It was also transplanted a couple times.

Thank you.

Wow! That's crazy! LOL! Doesn't it need to be cut to the ground?

Not this variety. It blooms on last years canes. I do thin out the thin & straggly. I let the flower heads stay on until Spring for winter interest. It also helps buffer the crown against the harsh cold.

That's really interesting. I didn't know they bloomed on previous year's canes.

Depends which cultivar, so many new ones on the market these days.

I don't see them here too often. They don't like San Diego's dry climate.

They wouldn't thrive in San Diego. They need that cold dormancy.

They need a lot of water in a semi-shaded area, also.
Yesterday it was 83 degrees here and today is going to be warmer. This is not good weather for plants which need a lot of chilling.

At least you didn't have to wake up before sunrise to clear the walkway & driveway

That sounds like a horrible task!
We typically can't grow plants, trees which need a lot chilling hour here in San Diego.
