This is the largest garter snake that I have ever seen in or out of the garden.

He's certainly a long one!

He or she Stera. I have no doubt that I will find out about that next spring. In any case their numbers are dwindling in certain areas in the USA due to water pollution and man made habitat changes so I am quite happy if they find my garden satisfactory to their needs.

A lovely little garter snake! We have a sandy/stony hillside where they have taken up residence... The adults were about 3 ft in length and about an inch in circumference..(larger after dinner!) the small ones were everywhere. We travel about 60 kms. east to shop for groceries and supplies...one day we came back to our car after loading up and my husband gasped in surprise...one of the small snakes had made his way into our car, ridden all that distance without us knowing he was there and was sitting on the console just above the steering wheel in the warmth. I grabbed a cloth from the back and managed to cloak him while gripping his neck just behind his head...and whisked him over to one of the large flower/shrub beds along the margin of the parking lot... he scurried under a bush and that's the last I saw of him. We have so many snakes we can export them! lol... He never writes or calls... wonder how he's doing?
