Huge flowers on a thick vine.

Talk about vigorous, this one came from one that had covered the entire side of a house. It looked fantastic in bloom. A friend also took a piece and turned it into an arbor. Wind really isn't its friend on the new growth.

I wonder how tall they can climb? I know that shoots on them can go vertical as straight as a tree trunk on a heavy duty "vine" that has the diameter of a branch. Still, only seen them used as either flat against a wall- the nursery- and topped at 6-8' or so,OR at the Embarcadero used to cover a big arbor. Even right there on the cool bay,it was in bloom.
Hey,Happy New Year.

Happy New Year to you. I know they were growing to the roof of a 2 story house. But they really need support of some kind.

I always wanted one. I did buy a small variegated S.maxima. Little did I know they want full sun..it just sat in light shade. I thought being variegated it might burn in sun.
Years later I saw one Wylie outside of a San Francisco nursery,in full bloom.
I think the green is more vigorous..but those blooms look fantastic on either.
