Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm

Nice one....dont know it..

It's a very tropical palm native to Mauritius and Round Island in the Indian Ocean. It only grows well in tropical and warmer subtropical climates. It does pretty well here in San Diego outdoors. San Diego is the only place in California where it will grow outside well (maybe a few places around the Los Angeles area, also).

We are very limited to what palms we can grow here, even in the South!

I would guess you would be limited as to the amount of palms could grow there. Most are tropical or subtropical in origin.

We're very lucky here in San Diego, there's hundreds of species of palms which grow outdoors here. Palms are one of the most planted trees here.

And I can see why!!

It's a very interesting palm. Its trunk looks like a bottle.

lol now I ve enlarged the photo on my phone yes the trunk does look like a bottle shape it is very interesting.

I tried it..and in winter it died. The potting soils that were wet all summer...did it in, in winter. Next time,lots of perlite in the mix.

This one would definitely be a lost-cause up there. It's way too tender and even cool-intolerant. It looks much better with summer water and dry in winter.

It grew fine all summer..one frond after another. I watered it often. Once late November came around I noticed it had stopped taking up water- the soil was not going dry. I put it on the porch. I forgot to tell me wife do not water it. Well,she did,and in early December it fell over. Funny thing is Andy- it looked like if I had a warm greenhouse? I might have been able to re root it. The fronds looked fine at first.

Hey- you see on Palm board that mention of a Royal palm growing in San Jose? Why not? SJ has soucal like summers,and mild enough winters. Foxtails grow in Hayward. Things are different.

I had a bottle palm when I lived in Fremont. It did grow very well most of the year outdoors. I did have to bring it into a sunny window before Thanksgiving, though. It actually died here in San Diego. I think I over-watered it during winter. Ugh! I see quite a few around town.
