Penny,
It's a pretty tree, the only drawback in the home garden is the spines along the long leaves.

Yes, this one is much worse than Yucca. There's dozen of species of Yucca which grow here. Some have soft leaves.

I did. t know there were soft leaf ones the two I have left are in pots guarding my back gate as its hidden from view if a y one decides to come over the gate.

I know there's a species with a spiny tip and long glossy leaves. I can't remember the species. There's so many species that grow here (especially in the deserts).

Sounds like the one I have the tip can and has burst leg veins open in people here its that sharp.

Might be P.monotheca. P.utilis is shorter leaved in California than that. P.monotheca is an enormous plant at its best- huge leaves.
My P.utilis is pot bound for life..at present. I would hate to plant it and its too big,or gophers,or a very cold winter takes it.
Still makes a great potted plant.

I know when given a lot of water and fertilizer it can grow extremely fast here. My friend has one that he constantly cuts back and starts big trunk cuttings. I was surprised how easily it grows from big cuttings.
