re purchase an old friend. (Aphelandra squarrosa (Zebra plant))

I had one for years..it faded away one summer on me. I might have fertilized too much. Not sure.
But this is a young off and running plant.

I was looking at a photo of the old one 3' and with a dozen blooms on it. I wonder what I did wrong? I know I tried to snap it out of a funk with fertilizer....but it had started to grow smaller leaves at the 4 or 5 year mark.
Could be short lived.

I think they are short-lived. I had one that did the same thing.

I'm thinking of removing some front yard plants. Mainly the in ground variegated rubber tree. Its not as nice a variety as "Ruby" that I have in a pot. Ruby is well, more red. No point in having two..and the less nice one takes a spot in front. It also for some reason, never can take drought...it wilts fast. I want to put in something dry..Aloe or oddball xeric plants. I want something not over 4' or so. Plus its near a pathway..so no spines.
That cold is on its way Andy- you might drop to 42f!..lol..I have look at 34f. I hope they are wrong.

That's strange that your variegated rubber tree wouldn't be drought-tolerant. Usually, most are so extremely drought tolerant. With having so little rain this year drought-tolerant plants are looking really good to plant here. I can't believe we're back to water-restrictions again!

Yes, the cold weather is here. It's going to be cool here all week...only in the mid-60's from Wednesday through the weekend. It's going to feel very cold after all the hot weather this winter.

Some say 33f for Hayward. One lousy night. It wasn't that cold early today..about 42f for a low. I can't see a drop below 35f. My bet.

Did you get below 35 degrees this morning?

I dont think so. I took a look and nothing frosted. Brugs and banana's still green. They arent happy at the run of 30's...but Brugs both pink and yellow in bloom.
I knew it. For one thing Andy- it was partly cloudy all night. No frost is going to form under that in the bay area.
Now- out in the valley and north bay, they had crazy cold. I heard one touched 22f in the vineyard country.
The bay area is too urban for frost this time of year. Why I only worry about the very short days of late Dec-Jan and this kind of arctic front.
Although,30 years ago? This would have been a hard freeze in Hayward. Things have changed.

That's really good new you haven't been in the lower 30's. It's makes a big difference when the temps stay above freezing.

What else?

See who else is growing Aphelandra squarrosa (Zebra plant).

See who else has plants in genus Aphelandra.
