Thank you for the Portuguese name Wylie I ve never heard of them destroying foundations though I have one right by the wall of my house in Allesley Village there is a huge one right next to an historic house its been there for years its never damaged the house.

When I was having my house restored, a lot of roots of the neighbors tree had to be cut in order to remove the old outhouse that had been damaged by those roots. They had burrowed under the floor and the wall was cracking. I now have an indoor bathroom :)

Thank you for the warning Wylie I shall have it moved in that case. Glad you now have an indoor bathroom I know what its like not to have a bathroom in one house I lived in years ago in the mid 70s it never had a bathroom only an out side toilet.

I grew up in a household of 8, with only 1 bathroom. We had to stand in line every morning and hoped to God we made it in time. My sister took forever in there. Sometimes I ran out in the snow behind the garage to relieve myself and make it to school in time. Oh the Good Times!

lol Hywel I can imagine what you went through as my brother was the only one amongst us six girls with just one batbroom in a two bedroom house .
It was when my two eldest were 4 and 2 years of age I lived in the house with no bathroom no inside toilet and no roof on the house as the council refused to house me so put me in this house. I use to use a tin bath hung out side which had a small hole in it so my quarry tile kitchen was swimming in water after bathing.
I recall going to my mum s Aunty Flo s and Uncle Arch s house in Wales where the toilet was at the top of their garden which had a wooden plank across with just a hole in it the only toilet they had the same just down the road at Primrose Cottage in Pentwynmaw in Merthyr Tydfil where my mum was born ☺ .. Same when I stayed at my uncle and aunt on my dads side my uncle was the station master at Crumlin station where the biggest viaduct was they lived on the hill.

I bought my house just before they put in city water. There was a spring across the street, and the people before me had put in a large open cement tank above the outhouse to catch rain water to flush. A couple of months after I bought, water was put in and they paved the road, then electricity poles were installed. Then I redid the inside (had to put in a floor!) and then moved in.

You have done well Wylie seems you ve done a lot to your property to update it you were lucky the city put the water in just after.
Great idea about the cement tank above the out house quite a few ex council houses now elonging to a housing association here have metal ones my mums last house had a large one above the outhouse coal house and outside toilet which are all joined together it had a pipe running down the side with a tap so you could use the rain water to water the garden or wash the car. Funny we were only talking about this last week on our history site.

Wow that really sounds primitive Trup. Reminds me when i visited Williamsberg, Virginia, which is an actual colonial village still standing today with all the trappings of colonial life including the public communal toilets which were just running boards with holes cut out. Chamber pots were also widely used - and the tin bathtubs as well.

My apologies Bathgate I called you Hywel last time lol its your white roses Hywel has white snow drops so I only noticed the white avatar photo that will teach me to check names.
That's great you visited the Colonial village and they have kept it as it was I believe they should keep places like this dotted around all countries as it makes most people appreciate what they have in today's way of living. The tin bath in the mid 70s I was use to as mum having 7 kids in a two bed house with only one bathroom bathed us younger ones in a smaller tin bath down stairs in front of the coal fire which gave my older sisters and brother the bathroom between them in turns we had to share one bath towel between 3 of us when I got older so being one of the youngest the towel was more wet than dry . We had to wear vests libity bodice on top then our cloths. Here is a picture of what one looked like.

Yes, the great California Gold Rush was pivital in the westward movement as were the outcasts & misfits. Those who couldn't conform to social conventions usually headed West. That's why California has a bunch of loonies. lol

The Portuguese name for these is Rosa Japonica (Japanese rose). They started blooming around Christmas and are almost finished. The roots will destroy foundations, so I don't have any.
