A tropical tree that ought to behave like a herbaceous perennial when established. I bought this on EBAY three months ago and planted it with three leaves - look how it's grown! The challenge will now be getting it through its first winter

A new one to me.....

This now has its roots mulched, the stem wrapped in straw, and the whole plant covered with two layers of fleece. Fingers crossed I can get it through the winter

It all depends on the winter ......it looks fairly exposed?

No, it's surrounded by other plants and protected by a yew hedge. The flowers in the bottom left belong to elsholtzia stauntonii (which needs a sheltered position in full sun) which is only three years old and already five feet across

Well there used to be something else (big) in this space that didn't cope with the summer
