The sand looks lovely and clean ,are the railings for a reason to break the waves as they come in ? we have huge boulders along our shore to try to stop the land being gobbled up by the sea ,it's not working more is being claimed each year ..

I'm sure the railings are to keep the sand on the beach & not the parking lot with those high winds - not 100% effective. We still get the occasional storm surge which sometimes sweeps across the entire Island. Several homes were already carried off to oblivion.

Its the same here Paul ,homes are tumbling into the sea in some cases whole villages there's one not far from us named Dunwich it use to be a large sea port many years ago , gone now except for a few remaining cottages ,they say you can still here the church bells ringing beneath the sea ... I guess we'll all finish up living on the highest mountains squashed up and pushing each other off for space ...

Can you hear the church bells of Dunwich? Hurricane Sandy is still fresh in my mind. Fire Island was hit hard. The beach was gone. Some pictures are still posted online. That's why I'm set back a few miles from the shore. I don't mind that 5 mile bike ride at all. So sad to see those homes tumble into the sea. The price you pay for an ocean view. I can't understand why people continue to live there but I guess they can since they rebuild.

I haven't heard the bells Paul but its not a place i go to often , we have problems here in that people buy homes near the edge of the cliffs and then expect the government to reimburse them with the price of the building when / if they fall into the sea . nobody is making them buy it in the first instance ...

interesting pic. I thought it was snow! We have those railings ... we call them snow fences... to stop the snow from drifting across highways. Sea level is rising... it seems gradual to us...but in geologic time it's a fraction of a second.

We have that here too Amy. Whenever there is a disaster, people look to the gov't for help.
