This Heliconia has hardly bloomed for me over the many years I've had it. It needs tons of fertilizer and doesn't get it. lol! The red bracts came up in January and it started flowering in April. Photo taken May 15, 2019.

Is that also called "Fire and Ice"? What a nice change from H.schiedeana.

Hi Andy! I don't think I've ever seen one of these. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the comments! It's flowering so well this year, I can't believe it. It's also been a cooler and wetter than normal spring. It's strange for a tropical plant to bloom so well in cool conditions.

Stan,
I think fire and ice is a variety of H. schiedeana. I used to have Red Christmas and Yellow Christmas; however, they died in the drought several years back. Helconia is one plant that absolutely hates drought. I have my two H. angusta plants sitting in a buck of water. They're always wet.

Hi Andy, beautiful flowers! The plant you gave me a few years back also bloomed well this year. The bright red and pure white combination is really stunning. I took a few pictures myself.

Wow! That's great! I forgot I gave you a section of my plant when I separated it about two or three years ago.
It probably liked all the rain. The bracts showed up around Christmas time, from what I remember.
Is your plant in the ground?

I'm not sure exactly when the bracts first showed up, it flowered in early May. The plant is in the ground and has formed a patch about 3' in diameter. I'd forgotten the name so thanks so the reminder.

It was strange because I think it was on New Year's Day I noticed the bracts were there. So, they must have grown sometimes in December. The flowers didn't appear until April and May.
I'm so glad you have a nice clump of them. It's a nice dwarf form which doesn't take up too much room.
