photo taken by my daughter Victoria as part of her record of organisms seen at Parc Slip Nature reserve Tondu, South Wales.
They are ambush predators and rarely make webs.

Great capture such a clear photo too .
Is this the one that eats flies Steragram?

yes it will eat any insect, woodlouse etc that lands/gets close enough for it to be grabbed. this is a female and has the deep pink markings down her sides.
Darren there are many species of wasp that are long and thin. Ichneumon types are the most obvious. Though wood wasps are in fact a type of sawfly.

Thanks Seaburn I'll have a Google when I've got a minute. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a book of native insects if I get to any Summer car boots, etc.

As long as what I saw wasn't gooseberry sawfly. Don't need that. I'll have to check for eggs now...

it is a she Stan. the males tend to be smaller and this one doesn't have the pedi-palps that males have. they look like a short pair of arms with boxing gloves on. She definitely didn't have them.

Cool, I spotted a wasp type thing earlier that I hadn't seen before. Not a fat wasp type, more like a 14mm long ant with narrow yellow stripes on it's sides, long antennae. It beat my camera's macro focus though, annoyingly
