Woodpeckers

Every year, regular as clockwork, first week in June woodpeckers bring their chick(s) into the garden to feed.
This photo shows the male feeding it's chick.
If you would like to see more photos of woodpeckers, please refer to a blog done on 8 June 2014 ... link below.

Hi Alan, that's an amazing shot.

Thank you, unfortunately they don't sit still for a minute.
I probably take 10-15 photos at a time and get one that is usable. Delighted that the digital camera was invented.

Yes, I know. These look familiar. They are very skittish and flutter away if I bat an eyelash. My friend has a remote control digital camera that he places in discreet locations and takes pictures from inside the house.

Thanks Karen. We are very lucky seeing this each year. The parent woodpeckers nest in neighbouring Corsican Pine trees. May sees the start of hundreds of 'feeding trips' between our peanut feeders and the nest. Fastinating to watch.

I might have to acquire some corsican pine trees! ;)

Karen ..... Good luck, like a good cheese, they do take a while to mature. šŸ˜„
The house we moved into in 1995 was built in an old orchard. Nine houses built in all and the original cottage was also restored by Crosby Homes, who are based in the NW (Manchester). The boundary of the orchard had some ninety CP's. Probably about twenty where removed during the building phase due to being unsafe. We originally had a row of five in our backgarden. Two removed by the builders. Two REMOVED BY STORMS! Fortunately the prevailing wind is a norh westerly, which blew them away from the house, into the farmers field. We have one remaining in the left hand corner of the back garden, by the patio. These have TPO's on them and I reckon must be approximately 70-80 years old.

Lovely photo Alan. Not something Iā€™m likely to see here sadly.

I just visited your blog Alan but it won't let me add a comment. You are very keen with camera. Definitely worth re-posting it. I remember you also had pheasants.

Thank you Kate & Paul. We are lucky here Paul, living on the outskirts of a small village, with neighbouring farmers fields. You've got a good memory Paul, we do get a wide variety of birds and do try and encourage them with many feeders in the garden. We've had a pheasant, a thrush, gold and green finches, robins, blackbirds, blue and coaltits also pigeons (unfortunately) and a jay. Also the odd sparrowhawk which the other birds aren't too keen on.

Sparrowhawk? I wonder if that's what came to my bird feeder, but not for the seeds. Take a look at this? Is this a Sparrowhawk? I could be wrong.

Hi Paul, I don't think it is a sparrowhawk, but very similar. Looks like a baby of the hawk family. At the end of the day, the end result for the smaller birds on the feeder is the same. I suppose that's nature, sad though it is.

Mmm that's true. Thanks Alan

Wonderful capture. They squawk loud lol as there are lots that come up from the nature reserve back of my home.
