It's a variety developed in Canada... Called Rose Therese Bugnet. not a really attractive name but the rose is singular. The petals smell like attar. it's not far from the old species I think. Very long, dangerous thorns. Had to wrap it in a quilt to plant it.

I do remember therese bugnet although not in my garden, gorgeous rosey smell. Planting her in a quilt 😂, but eminently sensible!

I have to be very careful whenever I prune her. The cut canes would be very painful if stepped on in bare feet! i wear gloves with gauntlets... and have to be careful not to lose my balance. Falling into that rose would be fatal!

A bit like my hawthorne hedges, awful thorns but the birds love them. They use it as corridors, they find loads of insects in there to eat, they hide from the sparrowhawks we get doing their daily rounds in there, they feed their young in them, mate in them, nest in them and squabble like a classroom full of noisy kids in there. My hedges are always full of life. I prefer them to fences any time.

When I lived in Guelph, in South Western Ontario, there was an old farm where the fields had reverted. The Hawthorn grew in abundance and it's shape and blooms stood out among the weeds... a beautiful tree but it was growing wild. Nothing like your hedgerow...but it was so attractive that it drew attention. Hard to believe, but that was 46 yrs ago! Wuuuh! It must be heavenly to walk along the rows and hear the birds within. are there badgers and stoats?

I do get the occasional stoat but not badgers, they are around but not in my garden.

I've finally been here long enough that I've come to know more of the wild creatures and plants. It's an educational experience... we have foxes, raccoons, bears, squirrels, groundhogs, weasels, chipmunks and skunks as well as moose and deer. At a time when my memory is less than perfect.. google is fabulous. whenever I see something I'm not familiar with... take a pic and post it on GoY or Fb. Instant gratification, because otherwise it would be forgotten and I wouldn't crack a book to look for it.

A bit like my atavar but with a bee instead of a frog, lovely pic of both. Is it a rugosa?
