Orb spider in its magnificent orb web. Orb spiders are not dangerous at all. They are docile & non aggressive spiders that prefer to flee if threatened or to just live discreetly in a dark corner undisturbed.

I don't mind them but am not too keen when they wrap round your face when walking through shrubs ..

yeh, I get a face full of spider webs some times, then I feel bad I ruined its hard work. I'm glad they keep the mosquito population under control.

We have a lot of spiders this year and earlier today Gerry took a large spider from my hair. I don't mind spiders at all. They do a great job of keeping the insects down.

I seem to be unknowingly damaging several webs recently while gardening ..well, I obviously realise eventually. Saying that, it’s not like they have lots to do. Plenty of time to repair!

I wonder how much time it takes for a spider to make a web. It has to produce all the silk.

That's a good question. According to google, about 1 hour. They are little engineers - using its own body to calculate measurement for web construction. It spins different types of silk for various components of the web.
'The web is also electrically conductive which causes the silk threads to spring out to trap their quarry, as flying insects tend to gain a static charge which attracts the silk.' Amazing!

There are lots visible at this time of year. first thing their webs sparkle in the morning sun. We have one that has a web next to the compost bins and there is always plenty of food in her web. I love spiders.
