There are 6 flower heads on one stalk and one on the other. I love it. Such a gorgeous colour.

Hi Sheila, like the photo, and I understand Karen's dislike of common names, I can't understand the confusion really, as Amaryllis is a genus of 1 species, native to the western cape, and south Africa, with only a few cultivars, and is frost hardy, while Hippeastrum is a genus of about 80 species, with many cultivars, and are frost tender, although they're both in the family AMARYLLIDACEAE.
They also have different planting needs, Hippeastrum should be planted with the neck and shoulders above the soil, in autumn, while Amaryllis should be planted just below soil level when dormant in late summer or spring, hope this helps clear up the confusion, at least on GoY, Derek.

Derek, thanks for this. South African plants are something of a challenge here. I’ll not bother. :)

Hi Karen, the south African Amaryllis is the hardier of the 2, down to 23f -5c, but probably wont like excessive wet, but should be ok in your greenhouse, Derek.

Thanks Derek. Maybe worth a try in there.

...although every time I google Amaryllis I only get Hippeastrum. And even when I put NOT Hipeastrum I still only get Hippeastrum! Homebird...where did you find yours please?

Its lovely! I just potted my Hippeastrum for Christmas flowering. But I just discovered that Hippeastrum and Amaryllis are totally different plants. But people call Hippeastrum by the name Amaryllis -This is why I don’t like common names. They lead to a lot of confusion!
