My favourite philadelphus. Reasonably small with contrasting purple-grey calyces. Looks more pronounced in the flesh.

It was an unplanned acquisition when we went to a garden in Glos. I fell in love with it on sight. I've just planted Belle Etoile.

That is nice and early. I too love the scent - it always reminds me of parents' evenings at school when I had a vase of it next to me ( to help the time go by!!!)

Many years ago, in our bungalow, we were surrounded by raised beds. I planted a Virginal bought in a plastic packet from Woollies in a wild area we nicknamed Dingley Dell (!). It was raised up and the shrub grew to enormous proportions and I pruned it so that it arched over the path. You could sit under it to get shade but the perfume could be rather overwhelming. Unfortunately, my novice over enthusiastic cutting back eventually killed it off. I loved that tiny piece of the garden.

I love Philadelphus. Have never seen this one before though. Mine are Belle Etoile and Virginal. This one looks lovely. The fragrance is the best in the garden. I even prefer it to my roses and honeysuckle, but then the roses flower a lot longer.
