ajuga, astilbe, cinnamon fern, JITP, hosta, aegopodia, ciliolate aster, creeping jenny ..and mossy stumps. need something red in there.

that's a good suggestion, 3d. I have lobelia syphilitica in the beds with my iris down near the stream...it's a lovely heavenly blue and doesn't usually start until July. have been thinking about Pilosella aurantiaca, it's a wildflower that carries it's blossoms high and is a super red/orange. a common name for it is fox and kits. another point in it's favour is that it's a wildflower and it's growing in my meadow.

What a lovely luxurious mixture of plants, red valerian maybe or lysimachia atropurpurea, both good for wildlife too..
