Does it have the large orange hips Lori? If not you could pick them for the house before those flaming beetles get a whiff of scent...

Thanks for your comment, Janey. I think the only way to pick them to avoid the serious spines is to take just the terminal end with buds and flowers and put it in a rose bowl. I have to dress like I'm going into battle whenever I prune it. Had the same var. in my town garden and left it behind because it was almost a tree and I'd have been ripped to pieces trying to dig it out for transplant. It blossoms twice a season if deadheaded after the first flush... the scent wafts for miles..the hips are a gorgeous red..and make a spicy taste in a tea. Have also contemplated saving the petals to make turkish delight or rosewater. Add that to the fact that as a landscape plant it is great as a hedge.. and it's an all rounder!

Ahh, like a Rosa rugosa, very strong scent but as you say has prickles for England, or in your case Canada! Haha
