Cyptomeria japonica 'Araucarioides' / Snake-branched Japanese cedar

Cyptomeria japonica 'Araucarioides' / Snake-branched Japanese cedar

Cyptomeria japonica 'Araucarioides' / Snake-branched Japanese cedar.
Few years ago I spoted this plant in nursery and was attracted by its intriguing long cord like branches.
Only later when I noticed the weird branching started to read on it and have learned how oddball plant it is.

It is not aesthetically pleasing tree if left to grow on its own. It is a tree for sophisticates who welcome ever-wider horizons. I do not think am one of them .....So I will have to figure out what to do with it. Experiment.

It is an old cultivar that originated in Japan.
German botanist P.F. von Siebold imported the plant from Japan to The Netherlands in 1859.

I do not expect anybody to like it but wonder if anyone grows it.

It is definitely interesting Lilybell.

LOL, Paulrija1, are you one of the sophisticates who welcome wider horizons?
Yes,it is similar to cryptomeria japonica Rasen.
Except, 'Rasen' has curled needles like "Spiralis. which I also have. I also think that Resen has more slender and distinctive shape and could be almost a "handsome" tree.

"Araucarioides" has very short green needles resembling a rope. I do like these very long slender whip-like branches. I hope it will not branch too much.

Thanks Meadowland for your comment. Now I have already 3 people who like this unusual plant. :-)

I've grown Cryptomeria japonica, Klahanie, but not this type. A really beautiful tree, with dark purple foliage till spring when it lightened to green, the foliage was quite spongy and fern like. I gave it to a friend as I ran out of space here, it's doing really well..
I'm not too keen on the shape of this ones branches, it is unusual..

I know the Cryptomeria japonica you are talking about Janey. I think it calls 'Elegans'. Is a delightful conifer that changes colour throughout the season. I had it too but it died on me. Glad to hear that yours is doing well in friend's garden.

Thank you Kate. You are a good sport.
