Staghorn Fern

Staghorn Fern

They don't look like ferns at all, but they are epiphytic ferns from tropical rain forest. The fronds can grow over 6 feet long. Will happily grow mounted to a plaque or in a chunky orchid mix.

Never seen one of those before!

It's not very common to see one of these. They usually grow up in the crotch of trees in the rain forest along side orchids.

they are beautiful and as they age the end splays out to look more like its name sake.

Yes and I can see some of leaves starting to resemble that. I'm surprised how big they get - 12 feet across!
thanks Eileen

You'd better order your room extension now Paul...

LOL a room just for a fern? I should have said it has the potential to grow 12 feet in diameter. You know if you happened upon one while walking through the Brazilian rain forest. It will only grow as big as its given space.
