Wild Bumblebee nest inside the bird nesting box.

They were fanning their wings to keep the temperature cool inside the box. When I had my 2 hives of bees they did the same.

At different stages of their lives the bees do different tasks. Some tend the queen, some feed the larva, some help in the honey process, some guard the hive from wasps raiding the nest, others make wax for the combs, and then they go out foraging. The drones are the males, they haven't got a sting and their main purpose is to mate with the queen.

Thanks Kate, when it gets hot we can hear a buzzing noise coming from the box and it's the bees at the entrance flapping their wings to keep the air circulating.

They've nearly blocked this hole up Kate. Just enough room for two bees to pass. I suppose it's to stop the wasps from raiding the nest of the lava.
