Cactus in kitchen window from outside.

It's a nice cactus but only one stem is alive.

Thanks, SBG! We bought them a couple of years ago as our granddaughter suddenly became interested in them. But her mum says she takes no notice of them any longer & if it weren't for her giving them an occasional watering they would have been dead by the time she gave them to me- over a year ago.
I'd never grown them before, except for one in Spain which grew & grew & grew! It was only a little ball shaped one that had yellowish flowers followed by long, bright red, seed capsules. It grew as a great mound with 100s of flowers, every round piece produced lots of flowers without stems which lasted a couple of weeks. Every piece that got broken off - or simply broke off - was capable of making another plant!

Thanks for that observation, Hywel! I didn't realise that they might be dead as I thought they were just that way! I shall have to have a closer look then. What should I do, cut away the dead pieces & hope the rest will continue to grow?
