Because we have had cool but wet weather lately, the bromeliads are finally starting to flower. This is the first time this has opened for me, and I have had it for maybe 5 years. The bracts are solid and firm, while the spikes on them are sharp. I keep the broms outside in a shady area, so they have that natural, ungroomed look.

Same here. I tell you it's very hard to get them silver outdoors. That is something a greenhouse can do easily enough but outdoors sun can burn..and getting the right light is near impossible as the seasons change too. Same for the Chamaedorea palm C.metalica.
At least Silver Urns bloom just fine anyways.
