A subspecies of the H. winteri of shorter spines and from my keeping experience this subspecies takes our Med climate winters much better. So,it must be found in higher elevations is my guess.
Anyway's makes a great potted plant.

You can actually pet this cactus- it feels sort of bristley soft. Just don't "pet" uphill.Then,its a cactus again.
