that's what I've always thought, too, Julia. although it's not visible in this picture there is a rubra next to the big fir tree. It's fruit are all dried up and I think it's because of the tree that it didn't get enough moisture. The white actea is closer to the stream (which is almost completely dried up) and it has fared better. another poisonous plant though. It spreads by rhizomes. no birds, squirrels or rabbits bother it... even insects aren't too fond of it.
