I would wait till spring, they become dormant in winter and need a dry cool place to hibernate. In the spring and summer the new roots will grow better I think.

Thanks Hywel I was going to send you a P/M as the parent
plant has 5 stems and the top one has 7. I have read that this cactus is variable in growth so I did not want to lose it as it seems it may reach an inpressive highth.
